Q
what are the two types of sensitization
A
peripheral and central
3
Q
peripheral sensitization
A
- occurs in the peripheral nerve fibres (peripheral ends of nociceptors)
- neurochemical in nature
- related to substances released into injured tissue
- molecules activate nociceptors to fire more than tissue damage would predict
4
Q
central sensitization
A
- occurs in the central nervous system (spinal cord and brain)
- can happen at:
- DRG (dorsal root ganglion)
- spinal cord terminals of nociceptors
- second order neurons
- higher brain centres
