Lecture 2 Flashcards
there is reason to believe that there are overlaps between
the anatomical and neurochemical bases of these phenomenon
feelings of social rejection can lead to
inflammation
social suffering activates the
“pain matrix”
acetaminophen can
reduce social pain
pain is not suffering it can
only cause it
pain can but doesnt always lead to
disability
pain is not
nociception
nociception
the operation of the circuitry that ends up resulting in the perception of pain - pain is conscious perception of what nociception eventually produces
thermal grill illusion
set up a series of bars that can be heated or cooled intermittently. If you touch just one bar, you will feel wither cold or hot, there will be no pain. If you put your hand on several at once, the perception you feel is “burning cold” and you will not be able to keep your hand on the grill for more than a few seconds.
what is the main take away from the thermal grill illusion
you feel pain but there is no nociception and no noxious stimulus to process
why do we hav acute pain
your bodys way of telling that you are experiencing actual or potential tissue damage and to make it stop
why do we have tonic pain
bodys way of punishing movemement to help with healing to stave off infection
why do we have chronic pain?
no evolutionary advantage; it is pathology
CIPA
congenital insensitivity to pain with anhydrosis, also known as HSN
anhydrosis
inability to sweat
HN
hereditary sensory neuropathy type IV
splitting vs lumping problem
should things be lumped into a group together or should they be split from each other due to differences- evidence forces us to split
how can you split pain
thorugh durationL acute to tonic to chronic
the arbitrary interval of time needed to pass before something can be considered chronic is
roughly 3-6 months
another way to split pain
etiology; the type of pain it is
third way to split pain
location of the pain
superficial pain
skin pain
deep pain
muscle, joint, and bone pain
Visceral pain
internal organ pain, it is poorly localized
