In 1972 the USA and USSR agreed to limit the number of ABM’s
Was the ABM treaty a sign of improved relations or worsened relations and why?
Partially both because it showed that they were cooperating but it also enhanced that idea of MAD as they could now destroy each other easier

Anti Ballistic missiles that shoot down incoming missiles

In 1972 the USA and USSR agreed to freeze the amount of ICBM’s they possessed for five years

They had agreed to reduce the threat posed by the nuclear arms race and MAD

In 1972 West Germany recognised E. Germany as a sovereign state however did not recognise it as separate from the German nation. De facto and not de jure

It showed the improvement of relations across the iron curtain other than the USA & USSR

1975 35 countries signed an agreement on three topics:
1) Soviet sphere of influence recognised
2) Trade of technology across Europe
3) SU to acknowledge and respect human and political freedom
Was the Helsinki agreement a success or failure and why?
It was a failure in some ways because the sphere of influence was not changing and the SU undermined the agreement by continuing to improve control in E. Europe
When and what was the SALT 2 agreement?
In 1979 the USA and USSR agreed on further arms reduction
Was SALT two a success or failure and why?
It was a partial success in that the leaders had come to an agreement by the US senate rejected it out of suspicion that unraveled the relationship and trust
