Explain two key features in a democracy
P- The Uks democracy is that the government is elected by the people
E- People in the Uk have been free to chose who they want to run the country by voting in an election without intimidation
E- Over 60 million voted in the 2019 uk parlimentary elections which decided the conservatives were to run the country
P- Free speech is supported
E- Citezens in the uk are free to express themselves however they like with some restrictions like not being able to use hate speech, encouraging violence or tell damaging lies
E- Many people have been both supportive and critical of how Boris Jhonson has handled the covid 19 pandemic and put their views online, in newspapers and on TV without the government stopping them
Two rights citiens have in a democracy
P- Right to protest
E- They may wish to do this as a part of a pressure group who hold demonstrations to show support for their cause
E- In 2012 thousands of people joined the anti-racism BLM protests that were held throughout the UK
P- The right to freedom of speech
E- Therefore, they can criticise the government if they disagree with their policies
E- Many people voiced their opinion about the UK governments decision to take military action in Syria in December 2015
Describe two responsibilites people in the uk have
P- Responsibility not to slander
E- This means that people cannot lie about other people or to incite religious or racial hatred
E- Abu Hamza was imprisoned in the Uk for inciting violence and then extrated to the Usa and found guilty of terrorism charges
P- Responsibility to protest
E- This means they cannot damage property or injure people and they need to respect other peoples opinions
E- This was not the case in June 2020 when 100 campaigners participating in the BLM march in Central London were arrested for assaulting a police officer, throwing missiles and carrying offensive weapons
