Background of FEALAC
The two regions are comprised mainly of developing countries. With the global trend of regional organization, the need for intercontinental cooperation between East Asia and Latin America arose since there is no official cooperative mechanism bridging the two regions.
What is FEALAC?
FEALAC is an association of 34 countries from East Asia and Latin America that form an official and regular dialogue between the two regions in 1999.
Vision
Aims to promote cooperation, better understanding and political and economic dialogue between East Asia and Latin America
Principle
Based on principles:
Respect for each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity
Non interference in each other’s internal affairs
Equality
Mutual benefit
Common goal of development
Respect and understanding for each other’s culture and way of life
Decision making by consensus
Key objectives: TIE
Tap the potential of multidisciplinary cooperation among others, in economics, trade, investment, finance, science and technology
Increase mutual understanding, trust, politic dialogue, and friendly cooperation among member states
Expand common ground on important international political and economic issues in order to safeguard common interests
Structure
Coordinators - functioned through coordinators one from each region. They are appointed as focal points of contact and on the basis of consensus.
Foreign Ministers Meeting - held regularly, highest decision making body and held every two years
Senior officials meeting - held once a year, prepare agenda for foreign ministers end
Working groups - political, culture and education
