Background
The Andean Community was established last 1969 when 5 South American Countries signed the Cartagena Agreement in order to improve the standard of living of the people through integration and economic and social cooperation.

Relationship with MERCOSUR
Andean Community and Mercosur complete the two main trading blocs of South America
1999 - they negotiating to create “South American Free Trade Area”
Dec 2004 - andean community signed a cooperation agreement with MERCOSUR for future negotiations towards integrating all of South America in a Union of South American Nations (USAN) patterned after the EU.
May 2008 - USAN formally established with the signing of the constitutive treaty in Brasilia
