Fat Metabolism Flashcards
Sources of fat for fat metabolism
1) Adipose tissue
2) Triglyceride ( in muscle)
3) Digestion (in blood)
How does a fatty acid enter the muscle
Attaches to a binding protein on the muscle
Fatty acid to Fatty Acyl Co A
ATP + CoA + FA
↓
Fatty Acyl CoA
Carnitine Shuttle
Fatty acycl CoA reacts with a carnitine molecule to enter the mitochondria
enzyme: carnitine acyl coA transferase
Beta Oxidation Purpose
Purpose is to remove Acetyl CoA
Rate limiting for Beta oxidation
b- ketothiolase enzyme
Beta Oxidation Products
Per cycle
1 NADH H+
1 FADH2
1 Acetyl CoA
Are carbohydrates needed to metabolize FAT?
Yes, because oxaloacetate is necessary
Need pyruvate to produce oxaloacetate
Pyruvate Carboxylase
Catalyzes the conversion of pyruvate to oxaloacetate
3 lipid groups
1) Simple- triacylglycerols
2) compound- phospholipids and lipoproteins
3) derived- cholesterol
Lipids role in the body (4 main roles)
1) Energy source
2) Protects organs
3) insulator
4) Hunger supressor and vitamin carrier
