MSPSL
What routine is used when leaving the carriageway?
MSPSL
What do you do at the first marker on a DC?
Check middle and left mirror
What do you do at the second marker on a DC?
Signal
What do you do at the third marker on a DC?
Check middle and left mirror
What is the last thing you do when entering and leaving a DC?
Check blindspot
What is important to do on shorter slip roads?
Keep speed low until sure is safe
Remain on slip road until certain road is clear
Joining and leaving a side road onto a dual carriageway
Use the slip road to adjust your speed to that of other traffic
Look for a gap in the traffic and move into the left hand lane
Always check for other traffic before emerging - BLINDSPOT
Always remember if you need to stop at the end of a slip road, it may then be difficult to reach a safe speed when joining the new road
Leaving a dual carriageway
On most dual carriageways you will get a sign for your exit giving you at least half a mile before the junction. Try to ensure you do not leave it too late to get into the left hand lane ready to exit
If there is no slip road, use the same procedure as you would when turning left into a side road
What should you always do when leaving a dual carriageway?
Use your MSPSL routine - at different junction markings
Get into the left lane as early as possible
Signal left early, due to the higher speeds of traffic
Decrease your speed in good time
Speed for dual carriageways
National speed limit = 70mph
Once on the carriageway, adjust your speed to keep up with the flow of traffic
Use your mirrors frequently to check what is happening around your car
Try to keep consistent speed - look for hills and dips
Overtaking on dual carriageways
Only when you’re sure it’s safe
Always travel in the left hand lane unless overtaking / turning right
When overtaking, use MSPSL routine
Always check for motorcyclists as they can approach very quickly from behind
Never overtake on the left
Never accelerate if being overtaken
If in doubt, don’t overtake
Gappah slip road
Reduce speed on DC ahead of slip road
Further reduce speed once on slip road
General DC tips
Be aware of junctions at the end of slip roads - may approach sooner than expect
Be aware of vision round corners
