Fascia Transversalis Flashcards
What is fascia transversalis
The part of the fascia which lines the inner surface the transversus abdominus muscle. 1.2 cm above mid inguinal point there is an opening in the fascia- deep inguinal ring
Extent of fascia transversalis
Anteriorly- linea alba
Post- thoracolumbar and renal fascia
Superiorly- diaphragmatic fascia
Inferiorly- inner lip of iliac crest and lateral part of inguinal ligament
Prolongations
- Internal spermatic fascia surrounding spermatic cord
2. anterior wall of femoral sheath
Why femoral vessels are inside the sheath and femoral nerve outside
The main arteries of abdominal wall and pelvis lie inside this fascia while main nerves lie outside.
Femoral sheath is formed by
Fascia transversalis anteriorly
Fascia iliac a posteriorly
Divided into 3 compartments
Medial compartment is called femoral canal.
Base of femoral canal is the femoral ring.
Boundaries of femoral ring
Anteriorly inguinal ligament
Post pectineus
Medially lacunar ligament
Laterally septum separating it from femoral vein
