A

Bulletins are issued hourly at H+55, if no convective sigmet are observed then “convective sigmet…none” will be reported

What is a convective sigmet?

A

A convective sigmet is issued for severe thunderstorms due to

  • surface winds greater than 50 knots
  • tornadoes
  • hail at surface greater than or more than 3/4 inch in diameter
  • embedded thunderstorms
  • line of thunderstorms
  • thunderstorm producing precipitation greater than or equal to heavy precipitation affecting 40 percent or more of an area at least 3,000 square miles

A

Hazardous to all aircraft,
Severe or greater turbulence
Severe icing
Low level wind shear

What is an airmet and different types?

A

Airmet is issued for lower intensities than sigmet
For general aviation smaller aircraft
- airmet Sierra for IFR and mountain obscurations
- airmet tango for moderate turbulence surface winds greater than 30 knots
- airmet Zulu for moderate icing
