Levirate
Old jewish custom in which a man marries his brother’s widow. In the time where more than one wife was allowed, this was an obligation system.
Bride Price
Money, land, or animals paid to the brides family. Found in societies where there are fewer women.
Clan
Group decending from the same ancestry and original residence.
Culture
The objects, artifacts, institutions, organizations, ideas and beliefs that make up the symbolic and learned aspects of human society.
Subculture
A sub-society having some relations to a larger group but some distinctions from it; limits ability to socialize.
Dowry
Money or property provided by the brides family in order to find her a husband. This money becomes her insurance policy in case her husband dies or leaves her.
Morality
What is considered right from wrong.
Mores
Norms that carry moral significance and are therefore the cause for severe consequences when broken or violated.
Folkways
Norms whose violation are punished informally if at all
Norms
Principle of right and wrong to guide and control proper and acceptable behaviors of a group; and accepted standard
Society
A group of people with shared customs and beliefs
Role
A set of behaviors that an individual is expected to demonstrate within a status (student, teahcer)
Status
Position or rank within a social group
Value
An ideal, individual worth of importance to a particular person.
