What is the divorce rate and when did it peak?
Give an explanation as to why the divorce rate has dropped?
40% peak 1976 with intro of Family Law Act in 1975 Marrying older (29-31ish)
Why is divorce a clinical problem?
No 2. stressful even scale, legal action
What are some of the costs of legal action?
Can take 2-5 years to resolve. Heightened animosity between partners, financial, uncertainty. Historically means loss of contact for fathers.
What are the four important clinical aspects?
- Determine motivating factor
- Stress management
- Emotional regulation
- Rumination control
What is involved in determining motivating factors?
only 5% take legal action, why them?
-Writing: blank page with reason for going to court, write without thinking-> evaluate whether reasons valid or not
Prepare if progressing- know what like, food intake, support etc.
What are strategies for stress management?
-Meditation- hgh stress= 2x per day controls rumination
(contra indication thought disorders, repressed emotion)
-Controlling cognitive errors: Stop thought exercise, practice gratitude
What are strategies for emotion regulation?
Writing, mindfulness, exercise
Systematic desensitisation for fear
What often occurs after court has finished and what may help?
People will crash, grief and loss (don’t make big decisions), worry per time limit, practice acceptance
