Aims: to decrease emotional reactivity and to encourage differentiation (the ability of an individual to establish a unique sense of identity and still remain emotionally connected to family of origin)
Triangulation
issue in marriage so one of the couple gets a 3rd party involved (affair, overworking, alcohol)
Boundaries
separate family from the outer world and give a unique sense of identity
boundaries should be semi-permeable
Schism in family
kids have to choose sides in the divorce
skewed family
one adult is dysfunctional
enmeshed family
1 person gets hurt the whole family reacts the same
Healthy communication
open, honest, clear, direct, and congruent
dysfunctional communication
blaming, placating, and computer
general guidelines of working with family
- open and nonjudgmental
- impart info that is clear and understandable -allow family choice
- opinions of each member need to be heard

trust, self-disclosure/self-awareness, and cohesion
Johari Awareness Model
divides self into 4 parts
- open (known to everyone)
- blind (others know but individual doesn’t)
- hidden (you know but others don’t)
- unknown (no one knows
Immature Group -open/hidden part smaller than blind and unknown
Mature Group -open part is the biggest part of model
Types of leadership
- autocratic (have own personal goals for group)
- democratic (focuses on members of group and encourages them to participate)
- laissez-faire (no leadership/action taken)
Group Developmental Phases
Forming -beginning to know each other
Storming -conflicts arise over power/authority/competition
Norming -group becomes more cohesive
Performing -real work phase of the group
Terminating -completion of task/stop meeting
