What is adolescence?
Period between the beginning of puberty and adulthood.
What does agency/agent of socialisation refer to?
Forces that teach someone about their society’s norms & values, eg. family, school, media.
Define arranged marriage.
Type of marriage where the bride and groom are selected by individuals other than the couple themselves.
What is bigamy?
The crime of marrying more than one person at the same time.
What is a blended (or reconstituted) family?
More sociological term for ‘step family’.
What is canalization?
The way parents channel the child’s interests in a way that they consider ‘gender-appropriate’.
What is a census?
Government survey of the population, eg. on age, sex, occupation etc.
What does child rearing involve?
The care and socialisation of (very young) children.
Define childhood.
Condition of being a child.
What is the class deal in relation to working-class women?
Carlen’s theory that women turn to crime if they do not get at least a low-paying job.
What is cohabitation?
Living together as if married.
Define commune.
A group living together and sharing possessions and responsibilities.
What is competition?
The act of competing; rivalry.
What does conformity mean?
Following established norms and values.
What are conjugal relationships?
Relationships between partners in a marriage.
Define conjugal role.
The role that each partner in a marriage performs.
What does consensus mean?
Agreement; the opposite of conflict.
What is continuity?
Idea that older adults maintain the activities, etc of the past.
What is a conventional family?
Nuclear family.
What is meant by crisis of masculinity?
The idea that traditional ‘masculinity’ is under threat, and men are struggling to adjust.
Who are dependent family members?
Members of family that ‘depend’ on others – typically children.
Define discrimination.
Unfair treatment of a person; action based on prejudice.
What is divorce?
Legal act of ending a marriage.
What does domestic division of labour refer to?
How housework is divided between partners.
What is a double shift in the context of women in marriage?
Women doing paid work and most housework (Oakley).
