Functionalism
idea that social institutions, roles, norms, etc. serve a function and are necessary for survival of the society.
Functionalists
those who believe in Functionalism, eg. Parsons, Davis & Moore, Durkheim.
Functionally important roles
role that Davis & Moore said was so important that better qualifications and skills were needed to achieve this role.
Gender
socially constructed set of characteristics of males and females.
Gender deal
(in relation to working class women) – Carlen’s theory: women might turn to crime if they didn’t get the “gender deal” (a caring husband).
Glass ceiling
(in relation to women in employment) – idea that legally there are no barriers to women’s promotion, but in practice women are not promoted
Household
a group of people living together who may not be related to each other but share common living spaces, meals, and bills, eg. university students sharing a house, friends living together.
Idealisation
presentation of group or individual as “good”.
Image –socially constructed ‘picture’ of an individual or group.
Life chances
opportunities each individual has to improve their quality of life. Weber said this was connected to socio-economic status.
Kinship
how individuals are related to one another, eg. by blood, marriage or adoption.

Isolation (social and family)
the absence of social interactions, contacts, and relationships.
Intergenerational
between different generations, eg. intergenerational conflict.
Interactionism
idea that meaning is produced through the many interactions of individuals.
Integrated conjugal roles
same as joint conjugal roles. Conjugal role – the role that each partner in a marriage performs.
Instrumental role (functions of the family)
the breadwinner, working role played by a father, according to Functionalists.
Immigration
the process of travelling into another country
Income – money created by work or banking etc.
