mass media?
media available to a wide range of people
master status?
the status that a person might adopt if they are labelled with that status, according to interactionalist Becker
middle class?
in traditional view of class, this is the class of the educated professional, or small business-owner.
mixed ability?
a class which is not a stream or set but has students of different abilities within it.
news value?
this influences the selection and presentation of events on the news, eg. violent crime is seen as more “news-worthy”.
norms?
socially accepted behaviours.
ofsted?
the Office for Standards in Education, established by government marketisation reforms of 1980s/1990s: they visit and report on schools in the UK.
organised religion?
established faiths, eg. Christianity; in context of education, they may set up faith schools.
particularistic standards?
the norms and values particular to the primary socialisation that happens in the family, according to Functionalist Parsons. This needs to be completed by universalist secondary socialisation in school.
pluralism?
the idea that all beliefs, cultures should be able to peacefully coexist in one society.
popular press?
media written for the mass market.
privatisation?
in economics, when companies are taken out of government control, eg. railways, energy companies, and are turned into private businesses.
propaganda?
information, especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote a political cause or point of view.
quality press?
media especially news which is written to a high journalistic standard focusing on serious issues.
questionnaire?
a research method involving a set of questions that people must answer.
racial discrimination?
unfair treatment on the grounds of race.
role conflict?
there are incompatible demands placed upon a person relating to their job or position.
roles?
action assumed or part played by a person in a particular situation.
rural?
adjective of the “countryside”.
setting?
grouping children by ability per subject; studied by Ball.
sex (gender) discrimination?
poor treatment of someone based on sex or gender.
sex (gender) equality?
when rights, opportunities, are the same for sexes/genders.
sexism?
prejudice based on sex/gender.
social class/social economic class?
what Marxists would stress as the most important aspect of social stratification – status based on earnings, and the prestige of their job/ education/ upbringing.
social cohesion?
strength of relationships and the sense of solidarity among members of a community. Functionalists say socialisation intends to bring cohesion.
social construct?
something created by social structures and institutions.
social control?
(formal and informal) – the way people’s attitudes and actions are controlled by social structures (formally by laws, etc), informally by media, peers, etc.
