What are the three types of muscles?
Cardiac, smooth and skeletal
Which body cavity contains the stomach?
Abdominal or abdominal pelvic cavity
What type of cells make up epithelial tissues?
Squamous cells
- flat
- close together
What type of cells make up connective tissues?
Fibroblast cells
What type of cells make up adipose tissues?
Adipocytes
What type of cells make up nervous tissues?
Neurons & neuroglia cells
What types of cells make up muscle tissues?
Cardiac cells
- branched & striated
Smooth cells
- spindle shaped
- no striations
Skeletal cells
- cylindrical shaped
- striated
What is the function of ribosomes?
To synthesize proteins from amino acids
What is the function of centrioles?
To direct the formation of mitotic spindle fibers during cell division
What is the function of the mitochondria?
To provide energy for the cell
What is the function of ERs?
Transport proteins, detoxify, make lipids, and store calcium ions
What is the function of lysosomes?
Stores amino acids and enzymes, intracellular digestion, engulfs “foreign” stuff, recycles, contains enzymes that digest worn out or non-usable stuff
Where is the peritoneum membrane located?
It lines the abdominal cavity
Where is the pericardium membrane located?
It is a fluid filled sac that encloses the heart
Where is the cutaneous membrane located?
It’s the skin
Where are mucous membranes located?
They line body cavities open to the exterior
Where are synovial membranes located?
Lining of joint cavities
Where is the pleura located?
It lines the inside of the rib cage and diaphragm and covers the lungs
List functions of the skin
- Regulates body temperature
- Protects from harmful affects of sun/radiation
- Excretes toxic stuff through sweat
- Synthesizes vitamin D
What is the sequence of epidermal layers from deepest to most superficial?
- Stratum basale (attached to underlying dermis)
2.
What is keratin?
Protein that protects epithelial cells from damage, outer layer of skin, in hair
What is melanin?
Pigment that makes tans, absorbs UV rays & radiation, gives some protection from sun damage
What are the two types of sweat glands?
Eccrine- found everywhere
Apocrine- found near hair (like armpits)
What is the function of the sebum?
Coats surface of hair and keep them moist, keep skin soft, inhibits growth of certain bacteria
