Chapter 2.2/2.3- Cells and Tissues Flashcards
Centrioles
Short cylinders made of nine trip units of parallel micro tubes
Cilia
Hair- like projections that move back and forth to move mucus or fluid across outside of cell
Cytoplasm
The part of the cell that contains everything inside the cell membrane except nucleus
Cytoskeleton
Network of proteins that defines he shape of a cell & gives it mechanical strength
ER
Network of membranes in the cytoplasm of a cell
Extracellular fluids
The fluid consisting of mostly water that surrounds a typical cell
Extracellular matrix
The solid or gel- like substance that surrounds a typical cell
Golgi apparatus
A set of membranes discs in the cytoplasm
Mitochondria
Powerhouse of cell; organelles in the cytoplasm that makes ATP
Mitosis
Division of a cell nucleus & chromosomes into 2 nuclei; each w/ own set of identical chromosomes
Nucleus
Round/oval mass of protoplasm w/in the cytoplasm of a cell that contains cell’s DNA & is bounded by a membrane
Plasma membrane
Membrane that defines the outer shell of a cell
Ribosomes
Very large enzymes that make polypeptides
Transfer RNA
A molecule that binds to the mRNA- ribosome complex assemble into amino acids into polypeptides
Cardiac muscle
The molar tissue of the heart
Cartilage
Connective tissue that provides support & flexibility to parts of the skeleton
Connective tissue
Supporting tissues; when consists mainly of an extracellular matrix
Epithelial tissue
A class of tissue that includes epithella and glands
Histology
The study of tissue
Muscle tissue
A type of tissue that generates force and allows the body to move
Nerve tissue
Tissue that conveys info by electrical signaling
Neurons
Cells that make up nerve tissues
Osseous tissue
Bones tissue
Reticular connective tissue
Tissue that contains reticular fibers and is found in lymph nodes, bone marrow and the screen
Skeletal muscle
Voluntary muscle that is usually attached to bone and helps us to move
Smooth muscle
Involuntary muscle found in the walls of hollow organs
