Chapter 3.1/3.2 Flashcards
Membranes
Thin sheets or layers of pliable tissue
Epithelial membranes
Thin sheets of tissue lining the internal & external surfaces or the body
Mucous membranes
Thin sheets of tissue lining the body cavities that open to the outside world
Serous membranes
Thin sheets of tissues that line body cavities closed to the outer world
Pleura
The membrane that encases the lungs
Pericardium
The membrane that surrounds the heart
Peritoneum
The membrane that lines the abdominal cavity
Serous fluid
A thin, clear liquid that serves as a lubricant between parietal and visceral memebrane
Cutaneous membrane
Another name for skin
Synovial fluid
A clear liquid secreted by synovial membranes that provides cushioning for and reduces friction in synovial joints
Integumentary system
Enveloping organ of the body that includes the epidermis, dermis, sudorifeicus & sebaceous glands & nails & hair
Keratin
A tough protein found in the skin, hair & nails
Melanocytes
Specialized cells in the skin that produce melanin
Melanin
A pigment that protects the body against the harmful effects of ultraviolet ray damage from the sun
Epidermis
The outer layer of skin
Keratinocytes
Cells w/in the epidermis that produce keratin
Epidermal dendritic cells
Skin cells that initiate an immune response to the presence of foreign bacteria or viruses
Merkel cells
Touch receptors in the skin
Dermis
Layer of skin between the epidermis and the hypodermis; includes nerve endings, glands & hair follicles
Phagocytes
Specialized white blood cells that engulf and consume bacteria, forgein material & debris; distributed throughout the dermis
Papillary layer
The outer layer of the dermis
Reticular layer
The layer of skin superficial to the papillary layer
Lipocytes
Fat-storing cells
Sudoriferous glands
Sweat glands that are distributed in the dermis over the entire body
