Fairtrade Flashcards
1
Q
What is it?
A
Aims to return bigger proportion of profits to producers of products
2
Q
Successes
A
Case Study; Starbucks has fairtrade coffee sourced from Guatemalan and Peruvian farmers
-However, it hasn’t stuck as now only 8% of their coffee is fairtrade
Standard of living improved for farmers who only usually see a tiny profit
3
Q
Limitations
A
More expensive for consumers, so not enough people buy
Still only a small profit sent back to consumers, however it’s worth it as it still makes difference
May increase potential overproduction, so prices of products fall and farmers are still no better off than before
