Factors that affect transpiration Flashcards
What factors affect the rate of transpiration
light intensity
wind intensity
humidity
temperature
How does light intensity affect the transpiration
more of it increases the rate
as guard cells are responsive to light when it is high they are turgid and the stomata are allowing water to be lost
How does humidity affect transpiration
Increased humidity decreases the rate of transpiration as the when air is saturated with water vapour the concentration gradient is decreased so less water is lost
How does wind intensity affect transpiration
more wind intensity the more the transpiration as if higher wind means air is less saturated with water vapour so high concentration gradient is maintain between leaf and the air so more water will be lost
Temperature how does it affect transpiration
Higher the temperature the higher the rate of transpiration due to the water molecules having more kinetic energy so water molecules in the mesophyll will evaporate and diffuse out quicker than at lower temps
