FACTORS AFFECTING LIFE PROCESSES Flashcards
name the three factors that affect life processes
temperature, light intensity, and concentration of reactants
what effect does temperature have on life processes?
enzymes work at optimum temp, if slowed down the life processes is slower, if too hot, it’ll be denatured meaning it can’t function anymore.
what effect does light intensity have on life processes?
if its brighter - photosynthesis rate is faster, but eventually at a point it wont help because another factor (like water) will limit the factor - there will not be enough of it for that rate to get faster
what effect does the concentration of reactants have on life processes?
in photosynthesis, when theres more water or carbon dioxide photosynthesis increases however at some point adding more of one wont help bc smth else will become limited.
why do some type of cells need more mitochondria than other cells?
some cells have more need for energy and so need to carry out more respiration
why do plant cells have chloroplasts and cell walls but animal cells dont?
animals don’t carry out photosynthesis, plus animals move around and so need to be flexible, while plants need to be more rigid.
why are root hair cells long and thin?
This gives them more surface area so that they can absorb water by osmosis more efficiently
