Factors Affecting Design Flashcards
What are the factors that affect how a design is created?
Appropriateness
Needs
Function
Aesthetics
Finance
Ergonomics
Quality
What is the appropriateness of design?
Is it suitable to solve the design problem?
when the design matches the function it needs to fulfil
What are needs in terms of design?
things a person must have
a goal or focus for the design that it needs to apply to
What is the function of a design?
when the design works for its intended use/creation
What are design aesthetics?
the beauty or visuals of a design
What does finance do as a factor affecting designs?
people need money to create a design
looking at the manufacturing/material costs and how much product will sell for
What is ergonomics?
the relationship between the physical world and people in it
eg) furniture, handle sizes, cup shapes, balcony heights
What is quality in terms of design
the ability for a product to be used for a long time without breaking or failing
What are the environmental considerations impacting designs?
Dematerialisation
Sustainability
By-products
Life of Product
Disposal
What is dematerialisation?
goal: use less materials to save money + environment
method: try to minimise amount of materials used on product or replace them with more suitable materials, reduced in volume/weight/size
Result: costs much less to manufacture, and less materials become waste and can be put to better uses
Why do designers use sustainable materials?
Goal: to lessen global impact and be socially responsible
Method: choose only renewable materials from places that regrow them without taking from the environment, this creates greener future and doesn’t harm anything
Results: can be more costly to buy material but environment isn’t harmed
Why do by-products cause issues?
some materials can produce unusable waste that can be toxic to enviro
designers should always consider how a design will be made and if it can make harmful/costly by-products
What is durability? (product life)
Goal: making a product last longer so less materials will be wasted
Method: using stronger materials resistant to corrosion
Results: manufacturer will sell less products, but produces less long-term waste and makes product look trustworthy
What is design for maintenance? (Product life)
Goal: extend the life of a product by making it repairable
Method: replacing batteries or parts, fixing damaged pieces, and making parts easy to pull apart and work on
Results: whole product lasts a long time and produces little long-time waste
What is building for obsolescence? (product life)
Goal: making products that last a certain amount of time
Method: making products to stop working after a foreseen time period so company can repurchase and recycle them
Results: generates profit and no waste
