Q

What does finance do as a factor affecting designs?

A

people need money to create a design

looking at the manufacturing/material costs and how much product will sell for

Q

What is dematerialisation?

A

goal: use less materials to save money + environment

method: try to minimise amount of materials used on product or replace them with more suitable materials, reduced in volume/weight/size

Result: costs much less to manufacture, and less materials become waste and can be put to better uses

Q

Why do designers use sustainable materials?

A

Goal: to lessen global impact and be socially responsible

Method: choose only renewable materials from places that regrow them without taking from the environment, this creates greener future and doesn’t harm anything

Results: can be more costly to buy material but environment isn’t harmed

Q

Why do by-products cause issues?

A

some materials can produce unusable waste that can be toxic to enviro

designers should always consider how a design will be made and if it can make harmful/costly by-products

13
Q

What is durability? (product life)

A

Goal: making a product last longer so less materials will be wasted

Method: using stronger materials resistant to corrosion

Results: manufacturer will sell less products, but produces less long-term waste and makes product look trustworthy

14
Q

What is design for maintenance? (Product life)

A

Goal: extend the life of a product by making it repairable

Method: replacing batteries or parts, fixing damaged pieces, and making parts easy to pull apart and work on

Results: whole product lasts a long time and produces little long-time waste

Q

What is building for obsolescence? (product life)

A

Goal: making products that last a certain amount of time

Method: making products to stop working after a foreseen time period so company can repurchase and recycle them

Results: generates profit and no waste

16
Q

What are hazardous materials (Disposal)

A

Goal: make sure toxic parts of products are responsibly recycled

Method: things like batteries are taken to special centres that deal with those materials and make sure they don’t pollute the planet in landfill

Results: enviro isn’t impacted and toxic waste is dealt with responsibly

17
Q

What is recycling? (Disposal)

A

Goal: reduce need for other materials by reusing old ones after use

Method: melting down plastics into new products, making new paper out of old

Results: saves money and no need for new materials

18
Q

What is biodegradability? (disposal)

A

Goal: make product able to decompose safely if it goes to landfill

Method: things like paper/natural products are better because they can break down and cause no lasting harm unlike plastic

Results: product breaks down and doesn’t affect environment

19
Q

What are social factors affecting design?

A

Social issues

Global issues

Economic issues

20
Q

What are social issues and their influence over design?

A
