During the 19th century, the British empire included around ⅓ of the world. Countries included Australia, Canada and New Zealand. In these countries, women gained the right to vote before Britain. New Zealand in 1893 and Australia in 1902.

Britain was referred to as ‘The Mother of Democracy’. This meant that it was embarrassing for Britain as they were seen as less democratic than the countries she was ruling over. This may have put pressure on British politicians to give women the right to vote.

A

In the 1860s, the American Civil War was fought between the South and the North. The North supported democracy and they ended up winning the war. Furthermore, the Liberal Politician Lord Palmerston supported the North as he wanted a change to the democracy in Britain too.
