Face, TMJ Flashcards
orbicularis oculi
- palpebral part: gently shuts eye
- orbital part: forcefully shuts eye (wink)
occipitofrontalis
wrinkles forehead, lifts eyebrows
nasalis
- transverse part: comprises nasal aperture
- alar part: flares nostril
procerus
draws down medial angle of eyebrow, produces horizontal wrinkle over nose
depressor septi
pull nose inferiorly (bunny nose)
depressor anguli oris
frown
depressor labii inferioris
draws lower lip downward and laterally (partial cringe)
mentalis
raises + protrudes lower lip
corrugator supercilii
draws eyebrows medially and downward
risorius
retracts corners of mouth (half-effort grin)
zygomaticus
- major: smile (corners of mouth up and away)
- minor: draws upper lip upward (show teeth)
orbicularis oris
closes + protrudes lips
buccinator
presses cheek against teeth, compresses distended cheeks
like playing the bugle
platysma
tenses skin of neck, can bring corners of mouth down
masseter origin
zygomatic arch, maxillary process
masseter insertion
lateral mandibular rami
masseter innervation
masseteric n. from anterior trunk of mandibular n.
masseter action
elevate mandible
temporalis origin
temporal fossa
temporalis insertion
coronoid process, mandibular rami
temporalis innervation
deep temporal n. from anterior trunk of mandibular n.
temporalis action
elevate + retract mandible
medial pterygoid origin
- deep head: lateral plate of pterygoid process of sphenoid bone, palatine bone
- superficial head: tuberosity of maxilla, palatine bone
medial pterygoid insertion
medial mandible near angle
medial pterygoid innervation
nerve to medial pterygoid from mandibular n.
medial pterygoid action
elevate + contralaterally deviate mandible
lateral pterygoid origin
- upper head: roof of infratemporal fossa
- lower head: lateral surface of lateral plate of pterygoid process
lateral pterygoid insertion
capsule of TMJ near attachment to disc, pterygoid fovea on mandibular neck
lateral pterygoid innervation
nerve to lateral pterygoid from anterior trunk of mandibular n., buccal branch
lateral pterygoid action
protrude + contralaterally deviate mandible
digastric origin
- anterior belly: digastric fossa on lower inside of mandible
- posterior belly: mastoid notch, medial side of mastoid process
digastric insertion
attachment of tendon b/w two bellies at hyoid body
digastric innervation
- anterior belly: trigeminal n. (V3) of mandibular n.
- posterior belly: facial n. (VII)
digastric action
- anterior belly: opens mouth by lowering mandible, raises hyoid
- posterior belly: pulls hyoid upward + back
