Q

Explain the principles of wound healing

A

-Promote adequate circulation of blood to transport all substances required for healing and combating infection.
-Condition of wound should be free from infected tissue and we are to practice aseptic techniques when performing wound dressing.
-Restrict movement of the wound area in the early stages of healing, to prevent newly formed tissue from tearing.
-Maintain adequate nutritional status, such as calories, protein, vitamins A & C, iron & zinc.
-Promote adequate oxygenation of tissues such as deep breathing and coughing exercises, to promote full lung expansion.

Q

Identify the factors affecting wound healing

A

-Blood circulation to wound site, poor circulation will reduce supply of oxygen and nutrients to the wound.
-Condition of the wound (extend of tissue damage, stress and tension placed at the incision, excessive strain on the incision site and infection on the wound inhibits complete healing)
-Too much moisture of the wound can cause maceration.
-Individual general condition can cause delayed wound healing [e.g. Age, chronic conditions (diabetes, vascular diseases, immune disorders), medications (steroids, chemotherapy, radiation)]
-Individual nutritional status, wounds are unable to heal properly if patient lacks necessary nutrients. (Nutrients such as calories, protein, vitamins A & C, iron & zinc.)
