face development Flashcards
bilateral maxillary prominences
lateral to the stomodeum
bilateral mandibular prominences
caudal to the stomodeum
single frontonasal prominence
ventral to the forebrain, upper border of the stomodeum
nasal placodes
- develop very closely to the opening for the stomodeum
- mark the site of the future nasal cavities
nasal pits
formed by the invagination of the nasal placodes
nasolacrimal groove
-separates the maxillary prominence from the nasal prominences
nasolacrimal duct
-cord formed when the ectoderm in the floor of the nasolacrimal groove forms an epithelial cord that separates from the overlying ectoderm
nasolacrimal ducts runs from
the medial corner of the eye to the inferior meatus
intermaxillary segment gives rise to
- philtrum of the upper lip
- upper jaw component (4 incisors will form here)–> premaxillary part of the maxilla
- the primary plate
unilateral cleft lip and primary palate
from one nostril through the lip and between the premaxillary (primary plate) and secondary plate)
bilateral cleft lip and primary palate
open from opening of the nostrils to the point where the incisive fossa is (V shaped)
midline secondary palatal cleft
secondary palates dont fuse
bilateral cleft lip and palate continous with midline cleft of secondary palate
from nostrils to the incisive fossa but it continues through the secondary palate
anterior cleft deformities
- lateral cleft lip
- cleft upper jaw
- cleft between the primary and secondary plates
posterior cleft deformities
- cleft of the secondary palate
- cleft uvula
