Face Flashcards
essay about facial nerve
FACIAL NERVE: It is motor nerve. It is the 7th cranial nerve. It leaves the skull through stylomastoid foramen. It enters the parotid gland where it ends by dividing into five terminal branches that supply the face muscles.
Origin of Buccinator muscle :
-Alveolar margin of the maxilla opposite to the upper 3 molar teeth
-Alveolar margin of the mandible opposite to the lower 3 molar teeth
-Pterygomandibular ligament in between
Insertion of Buccinator muscle :
-The upper fiber into the upper lip
-The lower fibers into lower lip
Nerve supply of Buccinator muscle :
Facial nerve through its buccal branch
Action of Buccinator muscle :
-prevent accumulation of food
-Blowing & whistling
Orbicularis oris muscle consists of :
extrinsic & intrinsic fibers
Nerve supply of Orbicularis oris muscle :
Facial nerve
Action of Oribcularis oris muscle :
closes the mouth
Branches of facial nerve :
Branches:
-2 branches after it emerges from the skull; Branch to supply occipital belly of
occipitofrontalis & branch to supply posterior belly of digastric.
-5 terminal branches: Temporal N, Zygomatic N, Buccal N, Marginal mandibular N, Cervical N.
Name the 3 divisions of Trigeminal nerve
Ophthalmic N, Maxillary N, Mandibular N
Motor supply of face :
Facial Nerve
Sensory supply of face :
Trigeminal nerve
cervical nerve
Ophthalmic nerve supplies :
Skin of forehead, Upper eyelid, Front of nose.
Maxillary nerve supplies :
Skin of lower eyelid, Side of nose, Upper lip.
Mandibular nerve supplies :
Skin of cheek, Chin, Lower lip
