F321-Redox Flashcards
What should the aim of all oxidation states for each atom within a compound equal?
Zero- because compounds are neutral.
Why is the oxidation number of each atom in elements always zero?
Because they are not bonding to different elements
Where is the reaction of hydrogen with oxygen to produce water used?
Hydrogen fuel cells in cars
Why is the reaction between hydrogen and oxygen to produce water increasing in importance?
It is an alternative to using petrol/diesel engines which produce pollution- the only product in the hydrogen fuel cell is water
Define Oxidation
The loss of electrons/an increase in oxidation number (state)
What happens to the oxidation number when an atom loses electrons?
It increases
Define reduction
The gain of electrons/a decrease in oxidation number (state)
What happens to the oxidation number when an atom gains electrons?
It decreases
Define redox
A reaction where both oxidation and reduction take place
