F321-Ions, Ionic Formulae & Equations Flashcards
Define oxidation number
A measure of the number of electrons that an atom uses to bond with atoms of a different element
What is formed when an atom loses or gains electrons?
Ions
What is the charge of Ag(silver)
It is + rather than 2+
What does the group number tell you?
The charge of the element (oxidation number)
Show the formula of hydroxide
OH-
Show the formula of ammonium
NH4+
Show the formula of Sulfate (VI)

Is AgCl soluble in dilute NH3?
Yes it’s soluble
Is AgCl soluble in conc.NH3?
Yes it’s soluble
Is AgBr soluble in dilute NH3?
No, AgBr is insoluble
Is AgBr soluble in conc.NH3?
Yes It is soluble
Is AgI soluble in dilute NH3?
No, it is insoluble
Is AgI soluble in conc.NH3?
No, it is insoluble
What colour is AgCl?
White
What colour is AgBr?
Cream
What colour is AgI?
Yellow
Write the equation when a soluble M2CO3 reacts with H2SO4
H2SO4(aq) + M2CO3(aq) > H2O(l) + CO2(g) + M2SO4(aq)
What is formed when Barium Chloride or Calcium Chloride is added to Sulfate ions?
White precipitate
Define Alkali
A soluble base that release OH- ions when in solution
Define Acid
Release H+ ions in solution (proton donor)
How do you test for an acid/alkali
Place litmus paper in the solutoom- if it turns red it’s an alkali, if it turns blue it’s an acid
Describe in words how a metal, reacts with protons
The metal loses electrons to become positive and the H+ ion from the acid gains these electrons to become H2. It is a redox reaction as it has gained electrons and the metal has been oxidised
What type of reaction is it when calcium change decomposes with heat?
Thermal decomposition
