F321-Metallic Bonding Flashcards
Explain why the strength of the metallic bonding increases from sodium to aluminium
- from Sodium to Aluminium
- The ionic charge increases
- the number of delocalised electrons increases
- the strength of the metallic bonds increase which require more energy to overcome
Define Metallic Bonding
The attraction of positive metal ions to delocalised electrons
Describe the melting points of metals
They have a high melting point because a lot of energy is required to overcome the strong metallic bonds
Describe the electrical conductivity of metals
They are good conductors of electricity.
Because the delocalised electrons are free to move and carry charge
Describe the solubility of metals
They are insoluble because the solvent cannot overcome the strong metallic bonds
Describe the bonding and structure of metals
They have metallic bonding - the attraction of positive metal ions to delocalised electrons.
They have a GIANT structure- held together by strong metallic bonds
