F.3 Requirements Of Bacteria Flashcards
Bacterial cultures
Culturing/ growing (creating) bacteria
Microorganisms
Any organism that is too small to be seen with the naked eye
Sterile/ aseptic techniques
All equipment used to handle bacteria must be sterilized to remove/ kill all microorganisms present (can be killed using heating under pressure, flaming or chemical means like bleach)
Contaminant
Unwanted microorganisms that get into samples were working with
Autoclave
strong heated container used for chemical reactions and other processes using high pressures and temperatures
Petri dish
Shallow, circular dish used for culturing microorganisms
Inoculating loop
Tool used to pick up and transfer a small sample from a culture of microorganisms
Agar
Jelly like substance used to grow bacteria
Photosynthetic vs Chemosynthetic
Photo - plants use energy from the sun and convert it into chemical energy
Chemo - process by which nutrients are created (by bacteria) using chemicals as the energy source rather than sunlight
Aerobic vs Anaerobic
Aerobic - needs oxygen to carry out cellular respiration
Anaerobic - can’t use oxygen because it’s lethal to the organism, undergoes fermentation rather than cellular respiration
