F.1 Archaea & Bacteria Flashcards
Archaea (archaebacteria)
Archaea - domain of prokaryotic cells that are chemically distinct from bacteria particularly in the difference of their cell membranes
Archaebacteria - kingdom under the Domain Archaea
Hydrophobic vs Hydrophilic
Hydrophobic- will not mix with water
Hydrophilic- will mix with water
Extremophile
Organisms that are able to live in extreme conditions
Halophiles
Salt-loving extremophiles that thrive in environments with high salt concentration
Thermophile
Extremophile that at relatively high temperatures
Acidophile
Extremophiles that thrive under highly acidic conditions (pH 1-2)
Thermoacidophile
Extremophile that is both an acidophile and thermophile, it can survive in very high temperatures and very acidic environments with low pHs
Methanogen
obligate anaerobes which use carbon dioxide during respiration, and give off methane gas as a waste product
Symbiotic relationship
Close ecological relationship between individuals of two or more different species
