F Terms Flashcards
facilitated diffusion
diffusion across a membrane with the help of a transporter
Fascia
a fibrous membrane covering, supporting and separating muscle fibers
fascicle
a small bundle or cluster, especially of muscle or nerve cells
faciculation
an abnormal, spontaneous twitch of muscle fibers that is visible on the skin surface
fauces
opening from the mouth into the pharynx
fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS)
term for the effects of exposure to alcohol in the womb, such as slow growth and defects
fetus
human from beginning of third month until birth
fever
an elevated body temperature above 98.6 F
fillibration
an abnormal skeletal muscle twitch NOT visible at the skin surface
fibrin
an insoluble protein essential in blood clotting, made from fibrinogen from the action of thrombin
fibrinolysis
dissolution of a blood clot by a proteolytic enzyme
fibroblast
large, flat cells the secretes most of the extracellular matrix of areolar and dense connective tissue
fibrous joint
a joint that allows little or no movement, such a suture or syndesmosis
fibrous tunic
the superficial coat of the eyeball, made of posterior sclera and anterior cornea
filtrate
fluid produced when blood is filtered by the filtration membrane
filtration
flow of blood through a filter due to blood pressure
filtration membrane
area of nephrons in the kidneys, made of the endothelium and basement membrane of the glomerulus, and epithelium of the visceral layer of the glomerular capsule
fissure
a groove, fold, or slit, either normal or abnormal
fixed macrophage
a stationary phagocytic cell, found in liver, lungs, brain, spleen, lymph nodes, subcutaneous tissue, and red marrow
flaccid
relaxed, flabby, or soft
flagellum
a hair like, motile process on the extremity of a bacterium, protozoan, or sperm cell
flatus
gas in the stomach or intestines
flexion
movement that decreases the angle between two bones
flexor reflex
protective reflex which stimulates flexors and inhibits extensors
follicle
a small secretory sac or cavity, or the group of cells the contains a developing oocyte in the ovaries
follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)
hormone the initiates development of ova, and secretion of estrogens. initiates sperm production in males
fontanel
a membrane covered spot where bone production is not complete, especially between an infant’s cranial bones
foramen
a passage or opening
foramen ovale
an opening in the fetal heart between the right and left atria. also a hole in the greater wing of the sphenoid bone that allows passage of the trigeminal nerve
fossa
a furrow or shallow depression
fourth ventrical
a cavity containing cerebrospinal fluid, between the cerebellum and medulla oblongata
fovea
the center of the retina where vision is clearest due to having cones only
frontal plane
divides into anterior and posterior portions
functional residual capacity
sum of residual volume and expiratory reserve, about 2400 mL
fundus
part of a hollow organ farthest from the opening
fungiform papilla
a mushroom like elevation on the tongue, most contain taste buds
