Eye Terminology Flashcards
Sclera
tougher outer coating of the eye
Retina
layer of cells that detect light stimulus. Containers rod and cone cels.
Optic nerve
the nerve that transports the stimulus detected by the retina to the brain
cornea
the transparent layer at the front of the eye responsible for the majority of light refraction
conjunctiva
the protective outer coating of the eye preventing damage to the cornea
iris
the coloured muscle that controls the size of the pupil
circular muscle
contract to constrict the pupil
radial muscle
contract to dilate the pupil
Pupil
the gap in the centre of the eye that allows light to enter and be detected by the photoreceptors in the retina
lens
the transparent structure that alters in shape to focus the light
suspensory ligament
the fibres that attach the lens and the ciliary muscle
ciliary muscle
muscles around the edge of the iris that contracts to make the suspensores ligament slacken and vice versa
refracted
when light is bent
