Biological molecules Flashcards
Chlorophyll
The pigment inside chloroplasts which trap light energy
Cellulose
A non digestible molecule that makes up the cell wall of plants
Starch
The storage molecule for glucose in plants. Turns iodine solution blue black
Glucose
Carbohydrate used in respiration
Turns Benedict’s solution brick red when heated.
Lipids
Molecules such as fat or oil- long term stores of energy (CHO)
Protein
Chain of amino acids in a specific shape (CHON). Performed a number of functions
Uses for glucose
Can be converted into lipids
Used in respiration to release energy
Converted into sucrose for transportation
Combined with nitrates to turn into amino acids and the protein
Can be combined with other glucose molecules to turn into cellulose and starch
