Eye Histology Flashcards
What are the three main layers of the eye?
Outer - Fibrous tunic
Middle (vascular)- Uveal
Retinal -
- outer pigmented
- inner retina proper
What are the chambers of the eye?
ANTERIOR: cornea to iris
POSTERIOR: iris to lens
VITREOUS SPACE: lens to posterior
Tell me some cool facts about Vitreous
Largest chamber, sits in back of eye
-humor present from birth and not renewed,
Has remnants of hyaloid artery that degenerated, FLOATERS
What’s the SCLERA?
Dense, regular collagenous connective tissue
Provides shape of eye
Few blood vessels
What are the layers of the CORNEA?
Part of the outer layer
- Epithelium
- basal cells undergoing mitosis - Bowman’s membrane
- Thin collagen - no cells
- strength - Stroma
- organized collagen - cellular - Descemet’s membrane
- fine collagen - Endothelium
- simple squamous
- metabolically active
What can you tell me about the general CORNEA?`
Avascular
Pain nerve fibers
Damage epi ok
Damage Bowman = permanent
STRONGEST REFRACTING LAYER
CHOROID FACTS
Part of UVEAL (middle) layer (vascular tunic)
HIGHLY vascularized
Nourish outer retina (by diffusion)
PIGMENTED
What is the ciliary body?
part of Uveal layer,
Anterior eye
Has ciliary muscle
How does the eye focus on near objects?
Ciliary muscles contract
Decrease distance between them and lens
Ligaments attached to lens go slack
Lens go to it’s natural round shape
That focuses on near things
Controlled by PARASYMPATHETICS
Where is aqueous humor made?
Cuboidal cells from retinal derived epithelium
Sitting on ciliary body
What are the three components of the lens?
avascular
- CAPSULE:
- refractive
- Type IV collagen - SUBSCAPULAR EPI:
- LENS FIBERS
- flat cells
- contain CRYSTALLIN
Nearsighted
Myopia
See close up
Focus in front of retina
Farsighted
Hyperopia
Focus behind the retina
See things at a distance
Is the iris just there to be pretty?
Yes and No
Irregular outer layer, pigmented cells
Layer of CT
Vascular layer
Muscle
Muscles of the Iris
Dilator papillae muscles
- radiating smooth muscle
- sympathetics
Constrictor/sphincter papillae
-para
