Eye Flashcards
What is Goldmann perimetry?
Goldmann perimetry tests assess the extent of the visual field. Visual field can be mapped according to detection of the light.
What is the Edinger-Westphal nucleus?
The Edinger–Westphal nucleus (accessory oculomotor nucleus) is the parasympathetic pre-ganglionic nucleus that innervates the iris sphincter muscle and the ciliary muscle. (leads to pupil constriction).
What is the pupillary light reflex?
Pupil constriction in response to light. Regulates the amount of light falling on the retina in different light conditions.
What is accommodation reflex?
Pupil constriction and convergence of both eyes when looking from a distant object to a close one.
How does the swinging flashlight test work?
It can identify asymmetry of afferent input in the pupillary light reflex. Called a Relative Afferent Pupil Defect (RAPD) eg. disease of optic nerve or retina.. optic neuritis or large retinal detachment.
What is exudative age-related macular degeneration?
When new blood vessels grow under the retina from the choroid.
What is atrophic age-related macular degeneration?
Atrophy of the outer retina.
