Famil history of bilateral or heriditary congenital cataract affecting a first degree family
1st degree relative with an ocular condition
Genetic syndrome associated with eye or vision disorders e.g trisomy 21
Maternal exposure to viruses during pregnancy like rubella
Neurodevelopmental conditions or sensorineural hearing loss - deafness caused by abnormal nerve function in inner ear
Prematurity
How to use opthalamoscpe
Switch on so light on bright white
Focus circle using dial
Darken room if possible
Begin a arms length
Screen negative
No anomalies
Repeat nipe at 6–8 weeks
Refer to healthy child programme
Screen positive
Congenital cataracts - refer to neonatologist and ophthalmologist before 2 weeks
Assesment by consultant surgery for severe at 6-10 weeks
Screen pos at nipe 6-8 weeks - requires consultant review within 11 weeks
What to look for
Normal shape and size
Symmetrically round pupils
Cornea clear
Eyelids postion and structure normal
Able to open eyes
Other conditions
Conjunctivitis - eye infection
Glaucoma
Colobama
Congenital cataracts
Causes central shadow completely obsecuring red reflec
Incidence
2-3 in 10000 live births are bird with cataract
In over 50% both eyes affected
