eye Flashcards

1
Q

what does the cornea do?

A

the cornea refracts (bends) light as it enters the eye, which helps to focus the light precisely onto the retina at the back of the eye.

Q

what does the lens do?

A

The lens, through a process called accommodation, adjusts its shape to ensure that the light is focused sharply onto the retina.

Q

what does the retina do?

A

The retina is a light-sensitive layer located at the back of the eye. Its main function is to detect light and convert it into electrical signals that can be interpreted by the brain.

Q

what does the iris do?

A

The iris is the colored part of the eye, and its main function is to regulate the amount of light entering the eye by controlling the size of the pupil.

Q

what does the optic nerve do?

A

The optic nerve is a bundle of nerve fibers that carries visual information from the retina to the brain. It serves as the communication pathway between the eye and the brain, transmitting electrical signals generated by the photoreceptor cells in the retina in response to light stimuli.

Q

what does the sclera do?

A

The sclera is the tough, outermost layer of the eye that provides structural support and protection to the delicate internal structures of the eye.

Q

what does the suspensory ligament do?

A

The main function of the suspensory ligament is to hold and suspend the lens in place within the eye.

11
Q

what are the function of rods?

A

responsible for vision in dim light conditions. They do not distinguish colors but are crucial for peripheral vision and detecting motion.

A

responsible for color vision and function best in well-lit conditions. (blue green red)

16
Q

what is short sighted?

A

they can see close but can’t see far

17
Q

why are people short sighted?

A

thier eye balls are too long so the light is focused on a point in front of the retina or when the lens is too thick and the light is focused infront of the retina

18
Q

why are people long sighted?

A

because their eye balls are short so the light is focused on a point past the retina or the lens becomes less elastic which means it cannot become thick enough to see (2nd mostly seen in the elderly)

19
Q

how can we treat short sighted?

A

concave lens

20
Q

how can we treat long sighted?

A

convex lens
