eager
Keen or enthusiastic about something. Example: “She’s always eager to learn new things.”
athlete
A person who is proficient in sports and other forms of physical exercise. Example: “The athlete trained hard for the competition.”
brush up
To improve your knowledge, skill, or memory of something you used to know, or do, but have now partly forgotten. Example: “I need to brush up on my French before we go to Paris.”
uncountable
A noun that cannot be counted (e.g., water, information). Example: “Research is an uncountable noun.”
research
The systematic investigation into and study of materials and sources in order to establish facts and reach new conclusions. Example: “She is conducting research on climate change.”
evidence
The available body of facts or information indicating whether a belief or proposition is true or valid. Example: “The evidence clearly shows that he was not at the scene of the crime.”
streak
A period of repeated success or failure. Example: “He’s on a winning streak, having won his last five games.”
dock
To deduct or remove part of a person’s wages, points, etc., usually as a punishment. Example: “They docked his pay for being late.”
phrasal verb
A verb that is made up of a main verb together with an adverb or a preposition, or both, the meaning of which is different from the meanings of the individual words alone. Example: “The phrasal verb ‘give up’ means to stop trying.”
gerund
A noun made from a verb by adding “-ing.” Example: “Swimming is a good form of exercise.”
infinitive
The basic form of a verb, without an inflection binding it to a particular subject or tense. Example: “To be or not to be, that is the question.”
auxiliary verb
A verb used in forming the tenses, moods, and voices of other verbs. Example: “Do you like coffee?” (Here, ‘do’ is an auxiliary verb.)
present perfect
A tense of verbs used in describing actions that have been completed or that are still relevant to the present. Example: “I have finished my homework.”
past perfect
A tense of verbs used in describing an action that was completed before another past action. Example: “I had finished my homework before dinner.”
conditional
A sentence structure used to discuss hypothetical situations and their consequences. Example: “If it rains, we will cancel the picnic.”
