Extra Study CH. 24 (The origin of species) Flashcards
How do new species originate from existing species?
-populations of a species is connected by gene flow
-a barrier to gene flow is established
-this population diverges genetically
-the population is reproductively isolated and a new species is formed
the process by which one species splits into two
speciation
a group of populations whose members have the potential to interbreed and produce viable, fertile offspring
species (biological species concept)
what holds the gene pool of a species together, causing its members to resemble each other more than they resemble members of another species
gene flow
the existence of biological factors (barriers) that impede members of two species from interbreeding and producing viable, fertile offspring
reproductive isolation
impede mating or hinder fertilization if mating does occur
prezygotic barriers
prevent a hybrid zygote from developing into a viable, fertile offspring
postzygotic barriers
habitat, temporal, behavioral, mechanical and gametic isolation are all examples of
prezygotic barriers
reduced hybrid viability, reduced hybrid fertility and hybrid breakdown are examples of
postzygotic barriers
distinguishes a species by body shape and other structural features
morphological species concept
defines a species in terms of its ecological niche, the sum of how members of the species interact with nonliving and living parts of their environment
ecological species concept
gene flow is interrupted when a population is divided into geographically isolated subpopulations
allopatric speciation
