What are prone position used for?
Procedures of the spine, back, rectum, and posterior aspects of extremeties.
What is lateral position used for?
Thorax, kidney, retroperitoneal space, and hip.
What is jackknife position?
patient prone with table flexed at the centre, Concidered one of the most precarious surgical positions as it has an adverse effect on circulatory and respiratory systems.
Friction, what is it, what’s it cause?
2 surfaces rubbing against each other – abrasion, blister
Shearing, what is it, what’s it cause?
Skin remains stationary, tissue beneath is shifted – stretching/tearing of subcutaneous capillaries, lead to ischemia and development of pressure ulcer
Compression, what is it, what’s it cause?
External pressure can restrict blood flow – tissue ischemia, tissue breakdown and pressure ulcers
