What are the nursing roles in the perioperative environment?

What is the role of the pre-op nurse?
Check all patient documents recorded and correct (eg allegies, fasting status, FBC)
What is the role of the Anaesthetic Nurse?
Prepare anaesthetic induction room, apply monitoring devices, assist with induction, intubation, maintenance and emergence from anaesthesia
What is the role of the Circulating nurse?
Assist surgical team to gown, open/dispense items/equipment, Applies diathermy plate, records intraop events, monitors blood loss, assists with all non-sterile stuff
What is the role of the Instrument nurse?
Preps equipment, surgical scrub, create/maintain sterile field, completes surgical count, applies surgical skin prep, preps instrument trolley for decontamination
The 8 P’s to consider when preparing for a surgical procedure?
Proper placement, Proper function, Place it once, Point of contact, Position of function, Point of use, Protected parts, Perfect picture
What does Asepsis mean?
“Without infection” or The absence of micro-organisms that cause infection
Ancillary services?
Xray, pathology, blood bank, ED, ICU, CSSD
Floor/wall/ceiling layout?
Seamless, easy to clean, Hard, non-porous, fire resistant, waterproof, stain proof, non-reflective
What are the 4 zones (layout)
Transition (change rooms), Unrestricted (pre-op/recovery), Semi-restricted (peripheral support areas, scrubs to be worn), Restricted (Scrub areas/operating room)
