Extra Kidneys Flashcards
What is the reaction called that breaks down amino acids?
Deamination
What can amino acids be broken down into?
Ammonia (NH3), keto acid
How can water be obtained from dry seeds?
Seeds contain storage molecules, during respiration water is produced
How does the peritoneum differ from the artificial membrane?
It can perform active transport
Why does peritoneal fluid have to be replaced more than haemodialysis fluid?
Peritoneal fluid removes less water and over time the concentration gradient reduces, haemodialysis uses counter current flow
What are 3 ethical issues of kidney transplants?
Leaves the donor with a single kidney, there is pressure on the donor, organs are for sale
Describe molecules of blood entering the kidney
oxygenated, contains glucose, little CO2, lots of salts
What molecules are made into nitrogenous waste?
Amino acids and nucleic acids
Give an advantage of uric acid.
Little mass
Describe the role of the nephron.
Water is reabsorbed from the filtrate, but urea is not, sodium ions are reabsorbed in the PCT, so water is reabsorbed by osmosis in the PCT, active transport of NA+ in the ascending limb, water reabsorbed in descending limb, hypertonic, water reabsorbed in collecting duct
What vessel supplies the kidney with blood?
Renal Artery
What are the 3 sections of the kidney?
Cortex, Medulla, Renal Pelvis
