External structure of the heart Flashcards
A hollow muscular organ that pumps the blood through the circulatory system by rhythmic contraction and dilation. In vertebrates there may be up to four chambers (as in humans), with two atria and two ventricles.
Heart
The red liquid that circulates in the arteries and veins of humans and other vertebrate animals, carrying oxygen to and carbon dioxide from the tissues of the body.
Blood
A tubular structure carrying blood through the tissues and organs; a vein, artery, or capillary.
Blood vessels
The membrane enclosing the heart, consisting of an outer fibrous layer and an inner double layer of serous membrane.
Pericardium
Each of the two upper cavities of the heart from which blood is passed to the ventricles. The right atrium receives deoxygenated blood from the veins of the body, the left atrium oxygenated blood from the pulmonary vein.
Atrium
A hollow part or cavity in an organ. Each of the two main chambers of the heart, left and right. Each of the four connected fluid-filled cavities in the centre of the brain.
Ventricle
The main artery of the body, supplying oxygenated blood to the circulatory system. In humans it passes over the heart from the left ventricle and runs down in front of the backbone.
Aorta
A large vein carrying deoxygenated blood into the heart.Carrying blood from the head, arms, and upper body.
Superior vena cava
A large vein carrying deoxygenated blood into the heart.Carrying blood from the lower body.
Inferior vena cava
