Black families headed by lone mother - children deprived from adequate care: struggle from the male breadwinner.
Fathers absence = lack of role model of male achievement.
Murray (1984)
Lone parent lack a male role model = lead to the underachievement of some minorities.
Sewell (2009)
Not the absence of the of fathers as role model that leads to black boys underachieving.
IT IS a lack of fatherly nurturing or ‘tough love’ = black boys finding it hard to overcome emotional and behavioural difficulties of adolescence
What does Gillborn (2008) state?
It’s not peer pressure but institutional racism = large number of failure of black boys
What does Lupton (2004) say?
Asian
Audit authorities in Asian families similar to school. Respect and behaviour was expected from children = supportive of school policies.

Black Caribbean family: provides girls with a positive role model of strong independent women = why black girls are more successful than black boys

Racial discrimination leads to social exclusion = more likely to be forced into substandard accommodation than white peoples of same class
2011 study of Indian and Chinese achievement
86% of Chinese and Indian pupils who receives FSM got 5 or more GCSEs whereas only 65% of white pupils who DIDNT recurve FSM’s got 5 or more GCSE’s
