- POCKET BOROUGHS were controlled by rich people
- POTWALLOPER BOROUGHS - people could only vote if they had a door with a lock
1832 Great Reform Act
PM Grey tried 3 times to pass Reform Act but was rejected as there were too many Tories in the HoL so the King threatened to add more Whigs to HoL if the Tories didnt pass the reform act.

Chartists called for “one man, one vote” but were resisted
granted vote to all householders
increased franchise to 13% of population
1884 representation of the people act
rural householders granted same voting rights as borough ones in second RA
increased franchise to 25% of population
1918 representation of the people act
women’s efforts in WW1 meant that the gov:
- gave vote to all men over 21 and to women over 30 who owned property
franchise increased to 75% of population
1928 equal franchise act
all men/women over 21 given the vote
huge increase in franchise as women were 53% of population
1948 end of plural voting
introduced one person, one vote system
1969 voting age reduced
age reduced from 21 to 18
