Define spatial awareness.
Consciousness of the surrounding space and it’s effectiveness.
How does spatial awareness contribute to the effectiveness of a dance?
Co-ordinates movements between dancers, helps avoid collision and injury, uses peripheral vision, helped by concentration, systematic repetition, movement memory.
Define phrasing.
The way in which energy is distributed in the execution of a movement phrase.
How does phrasing contribute to the effectiveness of a dance?
Helps to interpret the mood and dynamics of the piece, must fit with the music, gives a dance structure.
Define focus.
Use of eyes to enhance a performance or interpretative qualities.
How does focus contribute to the effectiveness of a dance?
Suggests character, draws the audience’s attention to specific points, emphasises importance of points, makes a performance more confident.
Define facial expressions.
Use of the face to show mood, feeling, or character.
How do facial expressions contribute to the effectiveness of a dance?
Helps to tell the story and choreographic intent of the dance, conveys emotion to audiences, makes them seem confident, can be practiced in a mirror.
Define musicality.
The ability to make the unique qualities of the accompaniment evident in the performance.

Conveys the mood and choreographic intent of the performance, gives it energy, helps the audience connect to the performance, matches the rhythm to the accompaniment.
Define projection.
The energy dancers use to connect with and draw in the audience.

Creates a confident performance, creates more impact for the audience, sends energy beyond your own body.
Define sensitivity to other dancers.
Awareness of and connection to other dancers.
