Exponential vs. Linear Growth Flashcards
What is the exponential equation?
y=a(x^t), where:
a is the initial amount
x is the rate it is multiplied by
t is the time period or how many times it is multiplied by
y is the amount of stuff remaining after t years
What is the difference in the equations of exponential decay and growth?
Given the equation y=a(x^t), in
exponential growth: x is > 1, *because as time increase a percentage of a + the initial a amount remains
exponential decay: x is < 1, *because as time increases only a percentage of a remains
Difference between exponential and linear growth
Linear growth: the slope is constant
Exponential growth: the slope becomes steeper as time passes
Difference between a negative and positive association
(+): as the independent variable increases the dependant variable increases
(-): as the independent variable increases the dependent variable decreases
What is the linear equation?
y=mx+b, where
m is the rate of change
x is the dependant variable (usually time)
b is the initial amount
